Care fees proposals - what could it be mean for you?

on Tuesday, 12 February 2013. Posted in N21 Experts

The average cost of care home fees in London is around £31,000 a year ( see http://www.payingforcare.orgThe news that the Government is looking at proposals to cap fees at £75,000, has been welcomed by our N21 care specialist Ken Waterhouse of Homecare Preferred, who has described it as "an encouraging first step"

“Any assistance that helps people from spending their hard earned saving is most welcome.  However there will be disappointment that the cap is set at more than double the amount suggested by Andrew Dilnot, the economist asked by the government to come up with a new funding regime for elderly care. He initially recommended that no one should pay more than £35,000. The other point of concern is that the £75,000 only covers personal care, not the accommodation part of care fees that people pay when they go into a home. This means people could still be paying for the accommodation and food part of their stay in a residential home indefinitely”

Home Care Preferred are planning a local care fee information evening in late March and anyone interested in booking a free place should contact Ken Waterhouse for more information (contact details below).  Guest speakers will be FSA-registered, trustworthy organisations and also specialist solicitors.

Ken went onto say “Governments over the years have not planned the funding of an ageing population and we are seeing the results of this now. People need to be aware of what benefits they are entitled to and also how to best fund their care, maybe using a combination of benefits and personal assets and savings.”
