Are you suffering from a chronic condition?

Do you want to lead a more natural lifestyle but don't know where to start?

My name is Siobhán and I am a qualified herbalist and naturopath.

I have lived in Winchmore Hill for many years and am very happy to have opened my first consulting room

and herbal apothecary in the area.

After suffering my own health problems, which lead me to discovering the power of natural plant-based medicine,

I knew I wanted to help other people take control of their health, vitality and wellbeing naturally.

What is herbal medicine?

Herbal medicine is the use of plant remedies in the treatment of imbalance and ill health. It is a system of both preventative and curative medicine. Although herbalism is referred to as an "alternative" or "complementary" discipline, it is still the most widely practised form of medicine worldwide with more than 80% of the world's population relying on herbs for treatment. I have been fortunate enough to spend time in India and South America in the Amazon, the Pantanal and the Andes learning from local people about how they use their native plants medicinally.

What is naturopathy?

Naturopathy is a holistic system of healthcare that promotes the body's innate ability to heal itself though nutrition, stress management, cleansing, exercise and lifestyle modifications. Naturopathy combines modern scientific knowledge with traditional wisdom, focusing on proactive prevention and diagnosis of the underlying cause of health issues.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda means the 'science of life'. It is the traditional medicine of India and the oldest healthcare system and most advanced herbal science in the world.

Ayurveda defines physiology in terms of three forces called doshas. These doshas are called vata, pitta and kapha. Everyone has all three doshas within them. The balance of these doshas is determined at our conception and defines what Ayurveda calls 'our constitution' or 'prakriti'. How we live our lives causes these doshas to fluctuate, and these changes cause different illnesses within the body. This is called 'Vikriti'.

Ayurveda seeks to restore the proper balance of these doshas through diet, lifestyle and herbal medicines.

Which health issues can herbal medicine and naturopathy support?

People see a herbalist and naturopath for the same reasons that they would see their GP.

People often turn to herbal medicine and naturopathy when they become disillusioned with the 'one size fits all' approach of conventional medicine, or want to address the root cause of their health concerns instead of taking medications to mask symptoms, and/or those who are seeking a more natural approach to their health and wellbeing.

Herbal medicine and naturopathy is also about prevention rather than just focussing on curing once illness has arisen. Some of the conditions people have consulted me for and been successfully treated include, but are not limited to:

• Stress, anxiety, depression

• Sleeping disorders

• Low energy and fatigue

• Male and female fertility

• Pre-conception planning

• Menstrual irregularities (painful/heavy/lack of periods)

• Menopause symptoms

• Digestive issues (bloating/constipation/IBS/Crohn's)

• Auto immune conditions

• Low immunity

• Arthritis

• High/low blood pressure

• Skin conditions

How can herbal medicine and naturopathy help me?

People have grown so used to feeling bad that they think this is normal. It is considered normal to rely on strong pain killers to get through painful menstruation, caffeine to boost constant low energy, sleeping badly every night, feeling constantly bloated, not having a bowel movement at least once a day. People have forgotten what it feels like to feel well and full of vitality.

It is possible to take control of your health. Simple changes can boost energy levels, reduce fatigue, induce a good night's sleep, improve digestion, help prevent illness and correct the underlying causes of long term conditions.

Natural plant-based remedies are side effect free and can be taken alongside pharmaceutical medications.

Trying to lead a healthy lifestyle can be confusing with all the conflicting information in the media. A little guidance from a naturopath can go a long way in helping you to achieve optimal wellbeing.

What does a consultation entail?

In your initial consultation I will determine your constitution, the physiological profile that you were born with, and we will discuss in depth your health concerns. We will go through a detailed history looking at your body systems, emotions, sleep, lifestyle and diet, and this will help me diagnose the underlying imbalance of your health concerns, suggest the changes you need to make to diet and lifestyle and choose the most suitable herbs to blend into a bespoke herbal remedy.

I trained in Western diagnosis, the same methods that your GP would use, and also Eastern diagnosis such as pulse and tongue analysis. I also use an iridology torch to examine your iris.

A little bit about me

In my spare time I can be found in our beautiful local parks discovering all the wonderful medicinal plants we have growing all around us, tending to my medicinal plants in my garden or walking my dog down by the river.

I adore the outdoors so embrace any chance I get for a good hike or mountain to climb. I love travel, always ensuring that wherever I travel to I take some time to learn about the local plants and their uses from the people who use them.
