Winchmore Hill School of Karate
Winchmore Hill School of Karate is a well established friendly karate club, offering traditional Shotokan karate lessons for adults and children from all social backgrounds and for all abilities. We run separate lessons for beginners, children (6+) and a main class for red belts to black belts.
Our Chief Instructor, Sensei Michael Randall, has been studying the art of Karate for over 50 years, He has obtained the rank of 9th Dan and is the Chief Instructor of the Shotokan Traditional Karate Organisation UK (SHOTO). Michaell has over 45 years teaching experience behind him and has been awarded the MBE for "services to karate" by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
Sensei Randall was one of the very few people to be taught by Masters Tetsuji Murakami and Hiroo Mochizuki and is the original disciple of the world famous Shotokan Master, Hirokazu Kanazawa 10th Dan. As he has not changed anything he was taught, we are extremely fortunate to learn a very traditional martial art.
For people who are new to Shotokan, Shoto (松濤) means "pine-waves" (the movement of pine needles when the wind blows through them). Shotokan training is usually divided into three parts: kihon (basics), kata (forms or patterns of moves), and kumite (sparring). It is often described as a dynamic martial art, based on Aerobic and anaerobic exercises and techniques, which build core strength, stability, speed and self disciipline, in a safe environment.
Our courses are taught in small groups by experienced black belts. Our eight lesson beginners courses are structured so that each week the student revises the previous week but something new is added each week too. If a student misses a class they can catch up the next week. Beginners courses focus on basic blocks, kicks and strikes, first kata and basic sparring. We recommend regular training to enable the student to obtain the maximum benefit from the class.
All our Club Instructors who teach hold relevant insurance and have an up to date martial arts licence. We are affiliated to the English Karate Federation.
There are many benefits to be derived from karate practice, from improving your fitness to the way you hold your body and present yourself. You will learn how to defend yourself and Shotokan karate is particularly beneficial for confidence building, focusing your mind and energy and helps to deal with school, exam and work stress for people of all ages.
Classes are held at the following times:
Adults: Kihon and Kumite 8:00pm - 9:00pm
Children: Kihon and Kumite 8:00pm - 9:00pm
Children are taught separately from adults although older children may be accepted in the main class at the discretion of the Chief Instructor.
