Extend Exercise Classes For the Over 60s

I'm Tracy Levy and I run Extend exercise classes for the over 60s in Highlands Village Hall and Bourne Methodist Church in Southgate.

There is a huge amount of research to show that exercising and being part of lots of social groups can help you stay healthy both mentally and physically as you get older. Did you know that many adults over the age of 65 typically spend 10 hours a day either sitting or lying down? This is not good as people who have more active lifestyles are at lower risk of heart disease, strokes, Type 2 diabetes, some cancers, depression and dementia? You can read more about the benefits of exercise for older people on the NHS website here

Physical activity can help to slow down the ageing process, so why not come along to one of my EXTEND  classes and start to get moving?

EXTEND  is a Registered Charity, dedicated to helping the over 60s (also 70s and 80s) maintain an independent active lifestyle through exercise. With its roots in dance, exercise and rehabilitation EXTEND is suitable for anyone who has been advised by their GP to take exercise as well as those for whom their regular class is becoming too much hard work. EXTEND classes are not just a slowed down version of another fitness regime, but are designed by a medical team who really understand the needs of older people.

I qualified as an EXTEND instructor in 1999 and as an EXTEND teacher I have been trained to plan and develop the classes according to the needs of those attending. As well as choreographing the exercises, I select the music to suit the exercise and class preferences. As a qualified Medau teacher I also use hand held apparatus (balls, hoops, clubs, batons, bean bags and scarves) to encourage and promote whole body movement, ensuring no two weeks are the same.

Classes are a weekly routine for older people who want to maintain and build their strength and balance. Remember the old saying –"use it or lose it?" It's true, you can ward off stiffness, aches and pains by gentle stretching and some more vigorous activity is good for the heart and your circulatory system. Improving your balance can reduce the risks of falls in older age.

I have worked with hundreds of lovely people, some of whom are picking themselves up after serious health problems or a bereavement, or are referred by a doctor, physiotherapist or other health practitioner.

Classes are held

Monday afternoon, 1.30-2.30 at the Southgate Methodist Church, The Bourne,Southgate, London N14 6RS.

Tuesday mornings, 10-11 (term time only) Highlands Village Hall, 5 Florey Square, Winchmore Hill, London, N21 1UJ.

Before you join a class I will talk to you about your health and whether you have had any health issues or surgery. I regularly exercise with people who suffer from arthritis, osteoporosis, Parkinsons, as well as people who are recovering after a stroke or have had hip or knee replacements. None of these conditions need stop you exercising – it is a matter of having an 'I Can Do' attitude and being prepared to join in our friendly, fun sessions. You are definitely never too old to have fun!

Here are some quotes from my class members

• 'I feel so much better than when I arrived'

• 'I never believed you could work so hard sitting in a chair'

• 'My physiotherapist gave me all these exercise, but I rarely do them at home, at least I do them here!'

• 'I really miss the class when I can not come'

• 'It gets me moving'

• 'I love the music, it makes me want to sing'

• 'You put the exercises to the music so well, they fit beautifully'

• 'I stiffen up if I miss a week'

• 'At the end I feel as if every muscle and joint has been worked!'

• 'You use music I can hear the words to and you explain everything so well

So do you want to be seen as 'you' and not defined by a list of ailments or medical conditions?

Do you want to have fun and leave feeling invigorated, stretched and uplifted in body and mind?

Perhaps you have never been to an exercise class before and plucking up the courage to 'give it a go' can seem daunting. Previous exercise experience is not required, come along an exercise your grey cells alongside your muscles and joints. Why not persuade a friend to join you? The first class is free but please call in advance to let me know you are coming.

Wear comfortable clothes, not forgetting your smile and give it a go...after all my EXTEND class might be 'just what the doctor ordered'!
