The Mayor's Big Green Fund is investing £900,000 in projects across London to improve local green spaces

and bring other benefits such as recreation, better walking and cycling routes and reduced risk of flooding.

Firs Farm in Winchmore Hill is one of the shortlisted sites.

AND THE GOOD NEWS IS WE HAVE WON!

The hours of standing in the foyer of Sainsburys; dropping flyers through local letterboxes; posting messages on social media sites has paid off - The Firs Farm team's bid has been awarded £175,000 in the Mayor of London's Green Poll, to develop Firs Farm Park into a wetland habitat and community park (with Greenways cycle path)!

The team, led by Toni Guiver, who masterminded the bid, (pink jacket, on the right of Cllr Chris Bond) secured an amazing 20% of all the votes cast across more than a dozen projects.

The grant will be used to create a new wetland habitat, capable of storing 30,000 cubic metres of flood water, that will reduce flood risk to parts of Edmonton. It will also restore 500m of river to the park creating an interesting and varied landscape and improving the ecology of the park.

What Toni Giuver has achieved since September 2014, through the formation of The Friends of Firs Farm is a case study in effective community action.

Toni would like to say A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who voted from the surrounding communities, local businesses, and community groups all who helped to promote the voting. She describes it is a community effort and it is a great example of people power -but Toni was the catalyst.

Here is a summary of the campaign

I'm Toni Guiver, founder member and the Chair of the Friends of the Firs Fark Farm. Last September (2014), I circulated a few of my neighbours in the vicinity of Firs Farm playing fields with the idea of setting up a Friends group for this rather neglected green space, off Firs Lane. From the very first meeting there was massive enthusiasum for the project and with the help of Enfield Parks Team we have formed an active new Friends of Firs Farm Park group and have held a number of sessions in Firs Farm Park, collecting litter, planting bulbs and clearing up overgrown vegetation.

We were even more excited when we were told in December that Firs Farm is going to be the major project for the Enfield Parks team this year. Working with the Council we have applied we have applied for a grant from the Greater London Autority (GLA) to create a wetlands habitat along the river and make the park both more attractive and more accessible for everyone in the local area.

Even more exciting is that our bid has been shortlisted as one of seven, for funding in the Big Green Poll

This is the illustration of what we would like to do, which was submitted as part of the bid.

The plan is to restore the watercourse and creating a substantial wetland habitat, without affecting the sports pitches.  The wetlands will increase the bio diversity of the site and will be planted up with native species to provide a natural habitat for birds, frogs, dragonflies and other wildlife. The other benefit as it will serve as a floodplain to reduce the risk of local flooding.

We want the park to be used by more people, whether you want to take a relaxing stroll, walk your dog, have somewhere attractive to bring the children, run, jog, play sport or cycle, as there will be a 500m long footpath/cycleway across the path.

We are already starting to involve local schools who will be able to use the space for curricular and extra curricula activites.
