Make It FOR ME

We are seeing a huge growth in sales of personalised products, across most markets, from cars to personalised diets & medical treatments, clothes, jewellery, home decor, the music we listen to, the TV programmes and online content that we watch.

We have become more selective about what we buy; we are fed up of mass marketing and the bland merchandise which you find on our homogenous high streets, we want something that is special, DIFFERENT and MEMORABLE.

We have come to recognise that we hold the purse strings and that any company that wants our money had better offer what we want, not just what they want to sell us.

Most people have less money to spend, have enough ‘stuff’, so you have to offer them something pretty special to get them to part with their cash.

Here are a few examples of interesting businesses that have tapped into this trend, from different parts of the world.

Shoromatic is a California based company that produces personalised swimwear. Customers upload their own artwork, graphics and size details and Voilà! a unique pair of California-made boardshorts that you won’t find anyone else wearing on the beach.

Those feeling less creative can also browse Shortomatic's gallery of over 700 designs, some of the designs are stunning and definitely not something you would find in Marks & Spencer. You can even make money by having your design accepted for the gallery and these designs are produced in limited editions of 200, with the design originator paid $5 per pair, with a further 5% donated to a charity Global Green. www.shortomatic.com

If you want to buy customised jeans try www.indidenim.com, personlised fabrics www.roomsbyyou.com

Your own personanlised sleeping bag from www.phdesigns.co.uk/customsleepingbags.php

http://www.quiltcreator.com allows people to design their own unique bed quilt.

If you fancy a pair of personalised skies ready for next season on the slopes go to www.edelwiser.com

Here’s another interesting persoanlised and inexpensive gift idea, which plays on parents guilt about not having enough time to read stories to their children! The Magic Story Machine allows users to record their own audiobooks with a personal message. Users pick from a selection of popular children's stories, then record the words online using their computer's microphone and a web-based autocue tool. Appropriate sound effects and music are automatically mixed in with the storyteller's voice, and the result is made available for download as an MP3 file.  http://www.magicalstorymachine.com/

When we buy people presents we want to give them things that have meaning and are something special. How about I’m a stuffed animal, which makes cuddly toys that resemble caricatures of real people? Users send in one or more photos of themselves (or whoever they want parodied) and some descriptive information such as interests and clothing choices and these are converted into a stuffed toy with a difference. www.iamastuffedanimal.com

Some examples of local companies who are producing unique personalised gifts will be added in the next few days (waiting for the photographs!)

People want creative things and in these highly competitive and difficult trading conditions you have to be creative if you want your business to take off. Don't waste your money in trying to grow a business in a market which is already well provided for.

It is interesting that many of these businesses are based on the West coast of America, is this a reflection of a more advanced 'me-culture' in California? a more entrepreneurial culture or just something in the water?
