Shop Locally - Support Our Local Economy

Small retailers and restaurants have been particularly badly affected by the economic downturn.

According to retail experts The Local Data Company, nearly 26,000 shops went out of business during the first nine months of 2009. Whilst this included some high profile multiples, such as Woolworths, over 10% of independent retailers have shut up shop during the year; with lack of credit, as well as fewer customers being major problems for many small shop owners.

You can help support the shops in our local community by spending your money locally.

There are lots of compelling reasons as to why you should shop locally:

Getting more money circulating in the N21 local economy
When you buy from locally owned businesses rather than from national chains more money is kept in the community.

Retain the unique character of the area
We are fortunate that we don't have many empty shops and other business premises in N21; there is always a natural ebb and flow of small businesses, but let’s keep it that way.

Environmental impact is reduced

If you shop at local businesses, you are not travelling as far, thus reducing your carbon footprint, congestion and pollution. Small businesses in turn also have a smaller carbon footprint than larger businesses.

Most new jobs are provided by small businesses

Small local businesses are the largest employers nationally.

Better customer service

Local businesses know their customers and retain the same staff for many years.

Local businesses invest in the community

Local businesses are owned by people who live in the community, whose children go to school locally. Local business owners make a greater contribution to local causes and charities than non-local owners.

Competition and diversity leads to more consumer choice

A marketplace of small businesses is a better way to ensure choice and competitive prices over the long term.

and because every little bit helps

There are several specialist shops/services in the N21 area and well worth contacting them. Having been severally dissappointed the responses from firms I contacted in the Yellow Pages, I have had brilliant service from both a locksmith and a gardener, both found via N21-Online.
