How to get children to take 10,000 steps a day

Any adult who has ever worn a pedometer can tell you that wearing one does encourage you to think about how much you move during the day and how close you are to the 10,000 steps a day we are all urged to aim for.

Here is an interesting new company in the States called MOVband who have an inexpensive wristband device, which they are making available through schools, through a loan programme, which the school can pay through fundraising.

MOVband was developed by a teacher and fitness instructor, who was looking at solutions to address the obesity problem in American schools, which has been made worse by budget cuts in schools hitting the provision of physical education.

The MOVband is designed to be simple and is promoted as something that is cool to wear. It is priced at $19.99 and displays the wearer’s steps. There are also accessories that wearers can “earn” once the have achieved certain milestones, promoting healthy competition.

A nice idea for a local business to bring to the UK?

Congratulations to Kevin Matthews of www.fit4-future.com for following up on this article and acquiring the UK distribution rights to the Movband!
