Downsize Fitness gyms - a sizeable business opportunity?

It is a sad fact that the people most in need of a gym - people who are seriously overweight or clnically obese are the ones who are the least likely to join one. Whilst inactivity is one of the likely causes of their weight problems, another thing holding them back is may be the prospect of embarrassment, exercising surrounded by lean bodies and 'fatism', real or imagined.

Downsize Fitness gyms have been set up in Chicago and Dallas to cater exclusively for larger people wanting to exercise. To be accepted people have to be at least fifty pounds overweight. The staff are especially trained to work with obese people, tailoring programmes to their specific capabilities, tracking their progress and also advising on diet. There are team activities for members to work together and support each other.

Whilst we don't as yet have the same levels of obesity as the US, the UK is heading in the same direction, so that there are likely to be a sizeable number of people who could benefit.

A franchise opportunity?  Maybe the government should be passing the membership fees on this side of the Atlantic to reduce future health costs?

Perhaps we could start with fitness classes for the 'fat'?
